A Graced Ministry
Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion administer the Body and Blood of Christ to members of the Eucharistic assembly. They are commissioned by the Bishop of their diocese to aid in giving out communion at mass as well as taking communion to the sick and "shut-in" within their parish community.
An Extraordinary Ministry
Eucharistic ministers are responding to the needs of the assembly. They are accepting an extraordinary role in helping to nourish those who wish to receive Christ's presence in the Eucharist as they gather around the Lord’s table.
The distribution of communion at Mass is ordinarily the function of the ordained or a formally installed deacon.
The Bishop appoints extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion for three years. Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion should be fully initiated Catholics and members of St. Joseph Parish. They must be qualified and able to fulfill their 3 year term with knowledge and reverence in the Catholic faith. By serving the assembly, this ministry acts as a witness to Christ's own loving service to his Body, the Church. Extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist assist in handing on to others the healing, nourishment, love, and energy that we have all received through Communion in the Body and Blood of Christ.
