Why?

It has been mandated by Bishop Tonnos for Hamilton Diocese. It is the policy of the Diocese of Hamilton that all volunteers be screened, both those presently serving and those seeking to do so, according to the procedures outlined in the Volunteer Screening Manual. In his letter dated December 20, 2001, Bishop Tonnos states, "Many volunteers assist in a wide range of activities and services. It is expected that those who volunteer wish only to help and serve with love, and not to do harm. Experience has shown that this is true in the vast majority of people who generously offer their time, energy, skills and resources. Some people, however, may seek the vulnerable to exploit or abuse them."

Who?

To fully protect St. Joseph Parish volunteers and those whom they serve, a screening committee was established several years ago.

The Screening Committee at present: Maureen Harper, Martin Pandzich, Sr. Kathleen O' Neill, Fr. Sudie MacDonald and Fr. Toby Collins.

How?

With the assistance of parish Ministry Leaders, the committee has been working to screen all volunteers long time, presently serving and those newly seeking to do so. We gather a volunteer's personal information. This data is stored and kept confidential. The team arrange interviews with Medium and High Risk Ministry volunteers. The Pastor or his designate gives a signature of acceptance of the volunteer. What? Parishioners who volunteer are asked to fill out a Blue Information Form. The Ministry you choose determines how many references are required, and whether or not a police check is necessary. Everyone receives a Screening in Faith Booklet to read and keep. The back of the form has a Volunteer Agreement that must be signed. Low risk Ministry requires filling out The Blue Info Form front and back pages only. Medium and High risk ministry requires the Blue Info Form all 4 pages, including 3 possible references, places to sign your consent for reference checks and a police check.
